What Is a Clinical Psychologist?

A Clinical Psychologist is a Registered Psychologist who has gone further — completing an accredited postgraduate degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in clinical psychology, plus a supervised registrar program. This is what AHPRA refers to as an Area of Practice Endorsement in Clinical Psychology.

This advanced training equips them to work with the full spectrum of mental health conditions — including complex trauma, personality disorders, eating disorders and treatment-resistant presentations — using highly specialised assessment and intervention techniques.

Higher Medicare rebate: Clinical Psychologists attract the highest Medicare rebate available under the Better Access scheme — a higher rebate per session than Registered Psychologists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both are AHPRA-registered and provide evidence-based care. Clinical Psychologists have completed an additional postgraduate degree in clinical psychology and hold a Clinical Endorsement with AHPRA. They manage more complex presentations and attract a higher Medicare rebate per session than Registered Psychologists.

Session fees are typically higher than Registered Psychologists, reflecting their specialist training. However, the higher Medicare rebate under Better Access means your out-of-pocket cost may be comparable — or even lower depending on the gap fee. See current pricing →

No referral is needed to book an appointment. To access Medicare rebates, you’ll need a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, or a referral from a psychiatrist.

Neither is universally “better” — it depends on your needs. For mild to moderate concerns, a Registered Psychologist is often an excellent and more cost-effective choice. For complex, chronic or specialist presentations, a Clinical Psychologist’s advanced training may be the better fit. Our team can help you decide — call 1300 224 665.

It’s the AHPRA term for a Clinical Psychologist’s specialist qualification — an Area of Practice Endorsement in Clinical Psychology. It means they’ve completed postgraduate training and supervised clinical experience specifically in clinical psychology, above and beyond general registration.
