How Psychological Assessments Work

Because assessments involve specific standardised tools and require pre-planning, the process differs from a standard therapy appointment. Here is what to expect:

Who Are Assessments For?

Psychological assessments are sought by individuals, families and professionals for a range of reasons, including:

  • Seeking a formal autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis — for children or adults
  • Understanding a child’s cognitive or academic profile for school support or adjustments
  • NDIS planning — assessments help establish functional capacity and eligibility
  • Identifying learning difficulties such as dyslexia or dyscalculia
  • Understanding intellectual functioning for disability, employment or legal purposes
  • Informing behavioural support plans for children or adolescents

Because availability varies, please complete our enquiry form and our intake team will confirm whether the assessment you need is currently available and appropriate.

Assessment Fees & Funding

Assessment fees vary depending on the type and complexity of the assessment. Please enquire for a fee estimate specific to your needs.

✅ NDIS, WorkCover & TAC — No Out-of-Pocket Cost

If you have an approved NDIS, WorkCover or TAC claim, your assessment may be fully covered — we bill your funder directly and you pay nothing.

Medicare rebates are generally not available for standalone psychological assessments (Medicare rebates apply to therapeutic sessions). Private pay options are available — call 1300 224 665 to discuss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are psychological assessments subject to availability?

Yes. Assessments require a psychologist with specialist training in the relevant tool. Please complete our enquiry form so we can confirm current availability and whether the assessment is clinically appropriate for you.

How do I book a psychological assessment?

Complete our enquiry form at the Contact page or call us on 1300 224 665. Do not use the online booking portal for assessments — assessments require a manual intake process to confirm suitability.

How long does a psychological assessment take?

This depends on the assessment type. Some instruments (e.g. CARS 2) take 30–60 minutes. Comprehensive cognitive assessments (e.g. WAIS IV, WISC V) typically take 2–4 hours spread across one or two sessions. Diagnostic assessments like the ADI-R may require multiple longer sessions. Report writing and feedback time is additional.

Can I get a Medicare rebate for a psychological assessment?

Medicare rebates (Better Access / Mental Health Care Plan) generally apply to psychological therapy sessions, not standalone assessments. However, NDIS, WorkCover and TAC may fund assessments in full. Please enquire and our team will advise on funding options for your specific situation.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. All assessments include a written report prepared by the assessing psychologist, detailing the assessment tools used, scores, interpretations, diagnostic conclusions (where applicable) and clinical recommendations. A feedback session is also provided.

What age groups can be assessed?

Age ranges vary by assessment tool. For example, WISC V is for children aged 6–16, while WAIS IV covers adults 16+. Some tools such as ADI-R and Vineland 3 span a wide age range. Our intake team will confirm the appropriate tool for your age group.
