What Family Therapy Can Help With

Family therapy addresses the whole family system — not just one person. Our registered psychologists help Melbourne families navigate:

🗣️

Communication Breakdown

Patterns of conflict, avoidance or disconnection that prevent healthy family dialogue.

👪

Parent-Child Conflict

Persistent tension, power struggles and disconnection between parents and children.

💔

Divorce & Separation

Managing co-parenting, loyalty conflicts and helping children adjust to family changes.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Blended Family Challenges

Step-parenting challenges, sibling dynamics and building a new family identity.

😢

Grief & Loss

Supporting families to process bereavement, illness or major loss together.

🧠

Mental Health in Families

When one member’s mental health affects family relationships and dynamics.

🏠

Parenting Disagreements

When parents aren’t aligned on values, boundaries or parenting approaches.

😨

Family Trauma

Processing shared or individual trauma that has disrupted family functioning.

🎯

Behavioural Concerns

Families dealing with a child’s challenging behaviours or emotional dysregulation.

How Family Therapy Works

In family therapy, your registered psychologist works with the family as a whole — exploring communication patterns, roles and dynamics. Sessions may involve all family members or subgroups depending on your goals. Treatment typically runs 6–12 sessions, adjusted as progress is made.

Who Should Attend Family Therapy?

Ideally, all willing family members attend — though your psychologist can work with whoever is available. Sessions are suitable for all family configurations: single-parent families, blended families, same-sex parent families and families with adult children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all family members need to attend every session?

Not necessarily. Some sessions may involve the whole family while others focus on subgroups. Your psychologist will advise on the best approach.

Can family therapy help even if not everyone wants to attend?

Yes. Your psychologist can work with whoever is willing to attend. Sometimes one or two family members working on their communication can meaningfully shift the overall family dynamic.

Is family therapy covered by Medicare?

Yes. With a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, sessions with a registered psychologist attract a Medicare rebate. Telehealth bulk billing is available with a current 12-week waitlist. Low-cost appointments are often available sooner.

How many sessions will we need?

Many families see meaningful progress in 6–12 sessions. Your psychologist will review progress regularly and adjust the plan accordingly.
