What Couples Psychology Can Help With

Couples psychology addresses the dynamics between partners — not just the individuals. Sessions can be helpful at any stage of a relationship, and for far more reasons than you might expect.

🗣️ Communication & Conflict
Patterns of miscommunication, repeated arguments or feeling unheard. Build practical tools to communicate more effectively and de-escalate conflict as a team.

💔 Trust & Infidelity
Rebuilding trust after betrayal, managing jealousy, or working through the emotional aftermath of infidelity — with or without the goal of staying together.

👨‍👩‍👧 Separation & Co-Parenting
Support for couples navigating separation, divorce, or building a healthy co-parenting relationship that prioritises the wellbeing of your children.

💍 Pre-Marital Preparation
Explore values, communication styles, expectations and long-term goals before marriage — a proactive step towards a stronger foundation together.

🔄 Life Transitions
New baby, relocation, career change, retirement — major transitions can place unexpected strain on a relationship. Navigate them together with professional support.

💛 Intimacy & Connection
Reconnecting emotionally and physically, addressing barriers to intimacy, or rediscovering what brings you close to one another.

😢 Grief, Loss & Trauma
Processing individual or shared experiences of trauma, grief or illness that are placing strain on your relationship and sense of connection.

🌈 LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy
Inclusive, affirming support for LGBTQ+ couples navigating relationship dynamics, identity, family acceptance and community-specific challenges.

✨ And Much More
These are just some of the reasons couples come to us. Whatever is affecting your relationship — big or small, common or uncommon — our psychologists are here to help without judgement.

How Couples Psychology Works

In couples psychology, your registered psychologist works with both partners in the same session — creating a safe, neutral space for open conversation. Sessions draw on evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), tailored to your relationship’s specific needs.

Individual sessions may also be recommended alongside couples work where beneficial for one or both partners.

Who Should Attend?

Both partners are encouraged to attend couples sessions together — this is where the most meaningful work happens. If your partner isn’t ready to join just yet, individual sessions can still be a valuable starting point. Your psychologist will guide the most effective approach for your situation.

Bulk Billing & Funding

We accept Medicare (Mental Health Care Plan from your GP), NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, and most private health funds. TAC-approved clients may access couples psychology at no out-of-pocket cost. Please note that Medicare’s Mental Health Treatment Plan currently applies to individual sessions — call our team on 1300 224 665 to discuss the best funding pathway for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is couples psychology?

Couples psychology (also known as couples therapy or relationship counselling) is a form of psychotherapy where a registered psychologist works with both partners together. The aim is to improve communication, resolve conflict, understand relationship patterns, and build a stronger, more connected relationship.

What issues can couples psychology help with?

Couples come to us for many reasons — communication difficulties, conflict, trust issues, infidelity, separation, co-parenting, pre-marital preparation, intimacy challenges, grief and life transitions. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit. Many couples use therapy proactively to strengthen their relationship and develop tools for the future.

Do both partners need to attend every session?

In most cases, yes. Couples psychology is most effective when both partners attend together. Individual sessions may also be recommended alongside couples work. If your partner isn’t yet ready to attend, individual sessions can still be a valuable starting point.

How many sessions will we need?

This varies depending on your goals and the nature of the challenges you’re facing. Some couples find meaningful progress in 6–8 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. Your psychologist will discuss a tailored plan after your initial session.

Is couples psychology covered by Medicare or private health?

Medicare’s Mental Health Treatment Plan (requiring a GP referral) currently applies to individuals, not couples sessions. TAC funding may cover relationship-related psychological support for eligible clients. Most private health extras also provide rebates for psychology. Call our team on 1300 224 665 to discuss your options.

What’s the difference between a psychologist and a counsellor for couples therapy?

Registered psychologists complete a minimum of six years of university training and are regulated by AHPRA. They deliver evidence-based psychological therapies such as CBT, ACT and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and can access funding schemes including Medicare and WorkCover. All of our practitioners are AHPRA-registered psychologists.
