How to Make a Referral

A straightforward process designed to minimise time and paperwork for busy practitioners.

01   Send Your Referral

You can refer your patient in one of two ways:

Option A — Referral letter or Mental Health Treatment Plan

Address your referral letter or MHCP to The Talk Shop if you’d like your patient seen at one of our clinics — it helps our intake team route them quickly and ensures correspondence comes back to you. Open referrals (e.g. “Dear Psychologist”) are also valid for Medicare and we’ll happily action them. Please include:

Option B — Online referral form

An online referral form will be available shortly via our referrer portal. Coming soon.

02   We Contact Your Patient

Once we receive your referral, our intake team will contact your patient directly to match them with the most suitable psychologist and confirm their first appointment. You do not need to follow up — we will reach out to your patient promptly after receiving the referral.

03   Ongoing Care & Communication

Your patient attends sessions with their matched psychologist. After the first session, their psychologist will send a brief update letter to the referring practitioner (with client consent). Progress reports and discharge summaries are available on request throughout treatment.

A note on addressing the referral: Medicare accepts both named referrals (addressed to The Talk Shop) and open referrals (e.g. “Dear Psychologist”). We do prefer a named referral where possible — it lets our intake team route your patient to the right clinician faster and ensures update letters come back to you. Either is valid for Medicare billing.

Registered Psychologists

AHPRA-registered, completing post-graduate supervision. Excellent for a wide range of presentations. Lower gap fee on Medicare.

Provisional Psychologists

Completing supervised practice under AHPRA registration. Supervised by senior clinicians. Cost-effective option for clients.

Clinical Psychologists

Higher Medicare rebate item numbers. Specialist training in complex and clinical presentations. Available at select locations.

Accepted Funding Schemes

We work across all major funding pathways so cost is rarely a barrier for your patients.

Medicare (Better Access)

Rebated sessions with a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan. Bulk billing available on limited basis — waitlist may apply. Both named and open referrals accepted.

Registered NDIS provider. Fully funded for eligible participants under Support Category 15 — Improved Daily Living. Self-managed, plan-managed and agency-managed.
