Psychology Under the NT Return to Work Scheme
The Northern Territory’s workers compensation scheme — the Return to Work scheme — is governed by the Return to Work Act 1986 (NT), with NT WorkSafe as the regulator and claims managed by approved private insurers.

Eligibility for a Psychological Injury Claim in the NT
NT WorkSafe says psychological injuries may be claimed where medical evidence supports that employment was a materially contributing factor. This may include:
- Psychological injury from a single traumatic workplace event
- Cumulative psychological harm developed over time
- Aggravation of a pre-existing mental health condition by your employment
- Injuries arising from workplace bullying, harassment, or occupational violence
The NT scheme is no-fault — you can make a claim regardless of who was responsible for your injury.
Reasonable management action exclusion
The exclusion applies where a psychological injury was caused wholly or primarily by a reasonable employer management action — such as a performance review, disciplinary process, demotion, or dismissal — taken in a reasonable manner. The NT applies this exclusion broadly, and employers bear the burden of proving it applies.
Treatment While Your Claim Is Being Assessed
Without-prejudice payments
Your employer’s insurer may fund reasonable medical treatment while assessing a claim, including through without-prejudice arrangements in some cases. Confirm psychology approval with the insurer before treatment begins.

- See your GP — obtain a Certificate of Capacity and referral to a psychologist where required
- Report your injury — to your employer and lodge your claim
- Confirm treatment approval — ask the insurer whether psychology can be funded while the claim is assessed

- Billing is confirmed before treatment — eligible approved sessions can be billed directly to the insurer
Your Rights as an Injured Worker in the NT
- You have the right to choose your own treating psychologist
- Your employer cannot direct you to attend a specific psychologist for treatment
- Your employer cannot access your clinical records without consent
- If your claim is rejected, you have the right to dispute through NT’s workers compensation dispute resolution process
- You are protected from adverse action for making a genuine claim
- Family counselling to support family members affected by your injury may be available without prior insurer approval

Yes. Your GP provides a Certificate of Capacity and referral to a psychologist as part of the claims process.
How many sessions does the NT scheme cover?
There is no fixed session limit. Sessions continue as long as they are clinically necessary, goal-oriented, and approved by your insurer.
Can I access psychology via telehealth in the Northern Territory?
Yes. Telehealth psychology is available and covered under the NT Return to Work scheme.
