Psychology Under NT Workers Compensation
The Northern Territory scheme is workers compensation under the Return to Work Act 1986, regulated by NT WorkSafe and underwritten by private insurers — Allianz, CGU, Gallagher Bassett or TIO. Your insurer approves treatment as reasonable and necessary, then we bill them directly.
The Territory has the lowest psychologist supply in Australia: 83.9 full-time-equivalent psychologists per 100,000 people, against 178.7 in the ACT. The Australian Government’s Psychology Supply and Demand Compendium Report (Department of Health, April 2026) puts the NT shortfall at 141.6% on unmet demand in 2025 — the highest of any state or territory, against 9.9% in the ACT — and projects the trainee pipeline to stay flat at around 23 FTE through to 2038, so it is not closing on its own.
For a workers compensation claim, that shortage has a cost that does not show up in workforce data. Time to a first appointment is not neutral in psychological injury — delay affects recovery, and it affects return to work.

You will see it called that, but “WorkCover” is Victorian and Queensland branding. In the Territory the scheme is workers compensation under the Return to Work Act 1986, regulated by NT WorkSafe and underwritten by private insurers. Same thing, different name.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact us directly. Your insurer needs to approve the treatment as reasonable and necessary, and your GP’s support helps that, but you do not need a referral before speaking to us.
Can a Melbourne psychologist treat me in the NT?
