Psychology Under WorkSafe Tasmania
Tasmania’s workers compensation scheme is governed by the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988, with WorkSafe Tasmania providing regulatory oversight and claims handled by private insurers such as CGU and Allianz.
The Talk Shop provides workers compensation-funded psychology via telehealth to injured workers across Tasmania. We are AHPRA-registered and work directly with your insurer.
Eligibility for a Psychological Injury Claim in Tasmania
To make a workers compensation claim for a psychological injury in Tasmania, you need to show:
- You are a worker covered under the Tasmanian scheme
- You have a diagnosable mental health condition — not just work stress
- Employment contributed substantially to your condition
- Your injury is not excluded by the reasonable management action provisions
Pre-existing conditions can be claimed where employment has materially aggravated them.
Reasonable management action exclusion
The exclusion applies where a psychological injury arose substantially from a reasonable employer action — such as a performance review, disciplinary process, demotion, or dismissal — conducted in a reasonable manner. Employers bear the burden of proving this exclusion applies. Courts have found that actions carried out in an unfair, arbitrary, or procedurally deficient manner do not satisfy the exclusion.
Immediate Treatment Access
Treatment can begin while your claim is being assessed
Once a workers compensation claim is lodged in Tasmania, your employer’s insurer must cover reasonable medical expenses — including psychology — up to $5,000, regardless of whether liability has been formally determined. The insurer has 84 days to formally dispute liability; if no dispute is lodged within 74 days, liability is deemed accepted.
How to Access Psychology Under WorkSafe Tasmania

- Lodge your claim — with your employer, who passes it to their insurer
- Confirm treatment approval — ask the insurer whether psychology treatment is approved while liability is assessed
- Book with The Talk Shop — telehealth may be available where clinically suitable and accepted
- Billing is confirmed before treatment — eligible approved sessions can be billed directly to the insurer
