How Adolescent Therapy Works

Many young people feel nervous about therapy. Our adolescent psychologists are trained to meet teens where they are — using conversation, creative tools, and practical strategies that resonate with how young people experience the world.

Sessions are 50 minutes, typically weekly or fortnightly. The first appointment focuses on getting to know your teenager, understanding what they’re experiencing, and building a plan together.

Approaches we use:

For Parents: What to Expect

Do I need a referral?

No referral is needed to book. However, a GP Mental Health Care Plan makes your teenager eligible for Medicare-subsidised sessions — worth discussing with your GP beforehand.

Will my teenager’s sessions be confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality boundaries will be discussed at the first appointment — including when information may need to be shared for safety reasons.

Can I be involved in my teenager’s therapy?

Parental involvement is agreed upon with your teenager. Where family dynamics are central, parent check-ins or family sessions may be incorporated.

How many sessions will they need?

This varies. Some teenagers benefit from 4–6 sessions; others need longer-term support. Your psychologist will discuss this openly from the outset.

At what age can a teenager start seeing a psychologist?

Our adolescent psychology service is for young people aged 13–17. For children under 13, our child psychology service is more appropriate.

Does my teenager have to come with me to the first appointment?

This varies. Some families prefer a brief parent-only intake; others bring their teenager from the start. Our admin team can advise based on your situation.

Can my teenager see a psychologist via Telehealth?

Yes — Telehealth is effective for adolescents and bulk billed for eligible clients. Please note there is currently a 12-week waitlist for bulk-billed Telehealth appointments. In-person sessions are typically available sooner.

What if my teenager refuses to go?

This is very common. If you’d like advice on how to approach the conversation with your teenager, call us on 1300 224 665 — our team has helped many families navigate this.
