Understanding Gender Dysphoria

Gender dysphoria describes the distress experienced by people whose gender identity does not align with their sex assigned at birth. Being transgender or gender-diverse is not a disorder — the distress is a consequence of the mismatch and of societal and systemic barriers to gender affirmation, not a product of gender identity itself (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).

Psychological support for gender dysphoria may include:

Mental Health and Gender Dysphoria

Transgender and gender-diverse people experience significantly elevated rates of mental health difficulties:

Gender-affirming care — psychological and medical — significantly reduces depression, anxiety, and suicidality in transgender and gender-diverse people (Turban et al., 2020).

Why Affirming Care Is Essential

Evidence consistently demonstrates that gender dysphoria and associated mental health difficulties are substantially reduced by gender-affirming care — social, psychological, and medical. Conversion practices and attempts to change gender identity are ineffective and harmful (American Psychological Association, 2021).

Our affirming approach:

Gender-affirming psychological support is associated with significantly improved mental health outcomes and reduced suicidality in gender-diverse populations (Turban et al., 2020).

Our Gender-Affirming Psychological Support

We provide affirming, evidence-based psychological support for gender-diverse people:

Gender Identity Exploration and Affirmation

A safe, non-directive space for exploring gender identity — at the individual’s own pace and without any predetermined outcome. We support the process of understanding and affirming gender identity, whatever form that takes.

Letters for Gender-Affirming Medical Care

We provide psychosocial assessment letters for gender-affirming hormone therapy and surgical care where requested by medical providers. Letters are consistent with current standards of care (WPATH Standards of Care, 8th edition).

Mental Health Treatment

Evidence-based psychological treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, and other mental health difficulties common in gender-diverse populations — using approaches adapted to the specific experiences of transgender and non-binary people and centring minority stress as a context.

Family and Relationship Support

Supporting families navigating a member’s gender identity — building understanding, improving communication, and strengthening family relationships. Family acceptance is one of the strongest protective factors for transgender young people’s mental health (Ryan et al., 2010).

All our work with gender-diverse clients is affirming — we use correct pronouns, chosen names, and affirming language from the first contact.

What Gender Dysphoria Treatment Looks Like at The Talk Shop

Your first appointment is yours to define — you can share as much or as little about your gender experience as you choose.

We use your correct pronouns and chosen name from the start. You do not need to justify, prove, or explain your gender identity.

We see gender-diverse children, adolescents, and adults. We are LGBTQIA+ affirming across all our clinical work.

We offer appointments in-clinic at our Mooroolbark, Wheelers Hill, Reservoir, and Melbourne CBD locations, as well as Telehealth sessions from anywhere in Australia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria?
Not to access general psychological support. A formal assessment is required for letters supporting gender-affirming medical care. The assessment is affirming and supportive — not gatekeeping.

Will you try to change or question my gender identity?
No. Our approach is affirming. We do not apply conversion practices or attempt to question, redirect, or alter gender identity. Being transgender or non-binary is not a disorder — it is a normal human variation.

Can I access Medicare rebates?
Yes. Mental health difficulties — including depression, anxiety, and trauma — co-occurring with gender dysphoria are within the scope of Medicare-rebated psychological therapy via a Mental Health Care Plan.

Do you see transgender young people?
Yes. We provide affirming psychological support for gender-diverse children and adolescents, and for their families. Gender-affirming family support is one of the most effective protective factors for young people’s mental health.
