Clinical hypnotherapy is an evidence-based psychological intervention that uses a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility to produce therapeutic change. Delivered by registered psychologists, it is used for anxiety, chronic pain, phobias, sleep difficulties, habit change, and performance anxiety.
Our registered psychologists in Melbourne offer clinical hypnotherapy across four clinic locations and via Telehealth.

Clinical hypnotherapy uses a deliberately induced state of focused, inward attention — the hypnotic state — to increase receptiveness to therapeutic suggestion and facilitate psychological change. It is not sleep, loss of consciousness, or loss of control. The client remains fully aware throughout and cannot be made to do anything against their will or values.
The hypnotic state is a naturally occurring phenomenon — similar to the absorbed, focused attention experienced when reading, daydreaming, or driving a familiar route. In clinical hypnotherapy, this state is deliberately induced and used therapeutically to access and modify patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour that are difficult to change through conscious effort alone.
Clinical hypnotherapy is distinct from stage hypnosis. When delivered by a registered psychologist, it is integrated within a broader evidence-based treatment plan and tailored to your specific clinical presentation and goals.
Clinical hypnotherapy is used in the treatment of:
Research demonstrates that adding hypnotherapy to cognitive-behavioural therapy produces significantly better outcomes than CBT alone — with the average client receiving hypnotherapy-augmented treatment showing greater improvement than 70% of those receiving CBT without hypnosis (Kirsch et al., 1995).
The hypnotic state is induced through a relaxation-based induction — a guided process of progressive focused attention that shifts the client from ordinary waking consciousness into a more receptive, inwardly focused state. In this state:
For chronic pain, hypnotherapy produces measurable reductions in pain intensity, pain unpleasantness, and pain-related distress through direct suggestion, imagery, and altered attention — effects supported by neuroimaging evidence of changes in pain processing (Jensen & Patterson, 2014).
Our psychologists integrate clinical hypnotherapy within a broader evidence-based treatment framework:
The most extensively researched approach — combining cognitive-behavioural techniques with hypnotic induction and suggestion. Produces superior outcomes to CBT alone for anxiety, depression, pain, and habit disorders.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy principles integrated with hypnotic techniques — using imagery, defusion, and values-clarification exercises within the hypnotic state to build psychological flexibility.
Targeted therapeutic suggestions delivered in the hypnotic state to directly modify specific responses — particularly effective for phobias, habits, performance anxiety, and sleep difficulties.
Hypnotherapy used as an adjunct to EMDR or trauma-focused CBT — facilitating access to traumatic material in a safely regulated state, or providing stabilisation and resource-building before trauma processing begins.
Your first appointment is a standard psychological assessment — exploring your history, current difficulties, and treatment goals. Your psychologist will explain the hypnotic process, address any questions or concerns, and assess your hypnotic responsiveness.
Hypnotherapy is delivered within the regular 50-minute session. Your psychologist will guide you through a relaxation induction, then introduce therapeutic content tailored to your specific presentation. You will remain aware and in control throughout.
Most people benefit from 4–8 sessions of hypnotherapy, depending on the presenting concern. It is most effective when integrated with a broader psychological treatment plan.
We offer appointments in-clinic at our Mooroolbark, Wheelers Hill, Reservoir, and Melbourne CBD locations, as well as Telehealth sessions from anywhere in Australia.

No. Stage hypnosis is entertainment. Clinical hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique delivered by registered health professionals within a psychological treatment framework. You remain fully aware and in control throughout — you cannot be made to do anything against your will or values.
Most people can achieve a useful hypnotic state with appropriate induction. Hypnotic responsiveness varies between individuals, and your psychologist will adapt their approach to what works best for you. A small minority of people have low hypnotic responsiveness — your psychologist will discuss alternative approaches if this applies to you.
Yes. Clinical hypnotherapy delivered by a registered psychologist as part of a psychological treatment plan is covered by Medicare rebates via a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.
Most presentations respond within 4–8 sessions of hypnotherapy integrated with broader psychological treatment. Your psychologist will provide a recommended treatment plan after your initial assessment.
Sometimes the most effective change happens when we quiet the critical mind. Clinical hypnotherapy can help.
