Alysha Mengem

Provisional Psychologist at Reservoir

Reaching out to a psychologist can be a big step. Whatever has brought you here, I hope to help you feel heard and supported.

Hi, I’m Alysha. I am a Provisional Psychologist completing a Master of Professional Psychology at Cairnmillar Institute. What draws me to this work is a deep interest in the unique perspectives and experiences that shape us. I really value creating a space that is compassionate, collaborative and grounded in evidence-based practice.

Before beginning my post-graduate psychology studies, I worked as a mental health support worker, assisting clients as they transitioned from acute care and found their feet in everyday life again. I worked with each client towards goals that they had set for themselves, taking small steps together week by week towards the things that mattered to them. This meaningful role broadened my understanding of many walks of life and presentations, and it instilled in me a strong passion for a client-centred approach.

I have also worked as part of a client-support team in a psychology practice, helping clients work out what kind of support they needed, and which psychologist might suit them. This experience gave me an appreciation of how important it is to find the right fit when seeking support.

In sessions, I draw on cognitive behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing. One of my favourite parts of this work is helping clients recognise their own progress; it can be much easier to see in others than in ourselves.

You’re very welcome here if you’ve never spoken to a psychologist before and aren’t sure what to expect. We can go at whatever pace feels right for you. I recently moved to Melbourne from Brisbane, and I see clients at our Reservoir clinic.
