Making high quality mental healthcare accessible for everyone

Telehealth via Video Call, using a Smartphone or Tablet

There are concerns about some of the commercial offerings for video calls, such as Skype and Zoom, being insufficiently secure, and that the commercial operator can “snoop” on the video or audio of the call.

To minimise this risk, The Talk Shop does not use Skype and Zoom. Instead, we use Jitsi Meet for our video call telehealth sessions, hosted on our own secure servers, with end-to-end encryption.

What you will need

  • A comfortable, private space – somewhere quiet where you won’t be overheard or disturbed, and have minimal distractions.
  • A WiFi or mobile internet connection with sufficient data
  • A smart phone or tablet with:
    • the “Jitsi Meet” app installed (free from the App Store and Google Play)
    • the battery charged
    • headphones if you don’t want to use speaker phone

Before your session

In advance of your session, we will send you a link for the video call.

How to prepare for your telehealth session

  • Before your appointment time, have your private space ready for the session
  • Get comfortable
  • Join the video call by clicking on the video call link sent to you
  • When prompted for a name, only use your first name, initials or nothing
  • Your Clinician will join the video call

During your telehealth session

  • You don’t need to have your webcam on for the whole session; it’s up to you and your Clinician for what works
  • Likewise, you can always mute your microphone if you need (just remember to unmute when you talk again 😊)

At the end of your telehealth session

Press the red “Hang up” button in the Jitsi Meet app:

Privacy

To ensure your privacy with a telehealth session:

  • We don’t include your name in the video call link
  • Your Clinician will want to make sure they are actually speaking to you before they say where they’re calling from
